Redlands Report: Stages 2 & 3

The NRC team wrapped up the Redlands Bicycle Classic this past weekend in Redlands, CA.  You can read our first race report here.  Fortunately, the hot temperatures from Friday’s road race did not stick around, and the weather for the crit and Sunday’s road race were just peachy.  Here’s a quick summary of the last two stages.

Lea & Judy make sure to stop and smell the roses

Crit: The Redlands crit is fast, fun, and technical.  It features nine corners, one of which is nearly 180 degrees.  As usual, everyone went hard from the gun.  Since we aren’t necessarily a “crit-team”, we made an effort to stay up front, watch important moves, and stay out of trouble.  After 60 hard minutes, the result was success!  We all finished together and upright.

Stage 3 (Sunset Loop Road Race): The final stage of Redlands is no laughing matter.  It hurts.  A lot.  2011 was no different.  As usual, as soon as the race was no longer neutral (meaning we weren’t all trying to jump into the lead com car), things started to get crazy.  The first lap features a Queen of the Mountain bonus, so naturally, everyone is rearing to go.  Things usually split up on the first lap and may or may not come back together.  The team goal was to keep Lea, Kristina, and Anna M. as high up in GC and as safe as possible.  Unfortunately, Kristina and Anna B. both flatted and had to do some chasing.  Lea, Anna M., and Rachel all finished in the main group.  All in all, it was a pretty good day for the team despite the flats.

Team dinner!

Here’s a final run down of GC results:

  • 24th – Lea Davison (guest rider extraordinaire and seriously awesome mountain bike racer)
  • 25th – Anna McLoon
  • 28th – Rachel Warner
  • 38th – Kristina Seley
  • 44th – Cara Gillis
  • 61st – Melanie Colavito
  • 64th – Anna Barensfeld

The team finished in 7th in the team GC competition, as well.  A huge thank you is due to all of our host families in Redlands who were extremely hospitable and awesome.  Also, many thanks to Maggie, Don, and Chris for working the logistical and technical magic to make things happen!

Up next for the NRC team is the famous Tour of the Gila at the end of April.  This coming weekend, the AZ riders will be competing in the AZ State Crit Championships.

And in local racing news, Kimberly T. took the win in the Cat 3 race with help from teammates Erin L. and Kapri G. at the Colossal Cave stage race in Tucson!  Congrats, ladies!
